Feeling swamped at work? No idea where to even start? Here are some actionable steps that you can take when you are feeling buried in tasks.
(1) Tackle that massive to-do list by sorting the tasks in logical order to better gauge where you need to start. I suggest dividing the tasks into categories. I start by categorizing my tasks as either urgent, important and not important.
(2) Well what if every darn thing is urgent and a priority? Examine things from a timeline and value perspective instead. Address the task due soonest first. If two or more are due by the same time, focus on the results from completing the tasks. Which result is the most beneficial or adds the most value?
(3) Be flexible. Just go with the flow! You are only one person. All you can do is what you can do. Breathe!
(4) Just say no! Ask yourself, “Am I really helping the team by taking on so many things that I struggle to close out action items?
(5) Delegate. It’s okay to ask for help! At the end of the day, achieving company goals is a shared responsibility.
(6) Identify your “power hours”. What time of day do you do your best work? Try rearranging your schedule so you tackle tasks during this time of day.
